Created: second half of 17th century Material, technology: once painted limewood Size: h.: 120 cm Description: The gothic altars and furnishing of St James’ church in Kőszeg were redecorated by the Jesuits in baroque style after 1657. After the suppression of their order, the church went to the Piarists in 1785 and to the Benedictines in 1815. New altarpieces were made in the 18th century, too. This angel presumably adorned an altar made in the Jesuits’ time, or the organ loft. The body posture, hairstyle and robe thrown over his shoulder with a strap are all typical of angel figures spread in the middle of Germany in the 17th century. |
