Created: 17th century Material, technology: bronze, with dark brown patina Size: h.: 30 cm Description: St Augustine is shown as bishop, with a child standing on his left, under his robe. The child refers to a popular legend since the 15th century: he met the Child Christ on the seashore who wished to ladle the sea out with a shell. That meeting enlightened Augustine on the inexhaustibility of the doctrine of the Holy Trinity. In many details the small statue adjusts to Venetian Girolamo Campagna’s works (1549/50-1626/27), but cannot be associated with any master by name. | 1 2 >> 1 2 >> |
