Ecce homo

Created: first half of 16th century

Size: h.: 53 cm

Description: A hip-length figure of Christ on an irregular octogonal base bearing the inscription: ECCE HOMO. Individual scenes of the Passion taken from the series and developed into cultic images were frequent themes in art from the 14th century onward. It is first of all the psychological elements that are meants in these pictures to elicit strong emotions, awe, compassion, conversion. The elegantly elongated, subtly and sensitively carved statue of great artistic merit must be of Spanish origin.
