Főapátsági Gyűjtemények

Saint Stephen, King of Hungary

Created: ca. 1750

Material, technology: linden, reworked in white plaster

Size: originally polished chalk, lower arms missing, the crown is a replacement and the cloak is damaged

Description: At the time the abbey was disbanded in 1786 an inventory was prepared which mentions the church’s marbled main altar upon which stood a statue of St Stephen. The altar still stood in the church before the grand renovations directed by Ferenc Storno. The statue, which was originally coloured with polished chalk, was covered in a layer of plaster during the course of the 19th century. St Stephen appears in the characteristic dress of a Hungarian nobleman. His relaxed posture, his turned head, his simple cloak, and the shaping of his hair are all characteristic of the works of Viennese Sculptor Johann Josef Resler in the 1750-60s. These features can be seen on the main altar of the church of the Trinity in Nagyszombat also.
