Created: 1725-1730 Material, technology: linden, originally polichrome, paint layers removed, arms and attributes missing Size: h.: 114 cm Description: St Ignatius Loyola, the founder of the Jesuit order, is depicted in alba and chasuble. He does not usually appear in Benedictine churches, but during the 18th century strict iconographic restrictions were lifted. Individualized features define the face of St Ignatius: receding hairline, wrinkled forehead, large eyes, open mouth, and a moustache originating from the base of the nose all give a curious, ecstatic expression to his face. This statue was also probably made in Franz Richter’s workshop. | |
