Főapátsági Gyűjtemények

St Elisabeth of Hungary

Created: 1725-1730

Material, technology: linden, originally polichrome, only traces of paint layers remain, arms, halo, some of the attributes, and the arm of the beggar missing

Size: h.: 112 cm

Description: Despite its fragmentary state and the loss of its original layer of lavish painting, this statue of St Elisabeth has still preserved its outstanding sculptural qualities. The scrupulous presentation of her period clothing and the rich folds of her cloak draped generously over her left shoulder are characteristics which can be found on the female figures in the altar of St Benedict in the Chapel of Our Lady at Pannonhalma. The statue, probably intended for one of the side altars of the abbey church, may have been carved in the Carmelite workshop in Győr during the second half of the 1720s.
