Description: The so-far unknown representative portrait is among the first works of the painter, and is atypical in his oeuvre. As the signature reveals, Vaszary began his portrait of Francis Joseph in Munich where he studied at the academy in 1887-89 and finished it in Paris where he resumed his studies at the Julian academy. His trip to Paris was supported by his uncle Kolos Vaszary, arch abbot of Pannonhalma from 1885. It was probably in return for this support that the painter created the representative full-length portrait of the ruler.
