He was the first truly momentous representative of history painting in Belgium, guided towards historical themes during his studies with Paul Delaroche in Paris. His large historical compositions earned him a name in the art centres of Europe. Via Karl von Piloty he also influenced the German academic painting. In 1844 he became the member of the Munich academy. |  |
