Created: 1843-1844 Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 105.2 x 80.5 cm Description: The picture shows the father of princess Stephanie, later king of the Belgians. Though unsigned and the name of the painter was only preserved in a document of the duke’s biography, it can be attributed to Winterhalter. The portrait was ordered by the duke’s father Belgian king Leopold I. Wild’s list dates it to 1843. Winterhalter was the most fashionable portraitist in 19th century West European courts. After some graphic training, he studied at the Munich academy. His painting was decisively influenced by the smooth Neo-classical style and approach of Joseph Stieler, court painter to Ludwig, king of Bavaria. | |
