Extasy of St Francis

Created: first half of 17th century

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 87.3 x 71.3 cm

Description: The half-length "portrait" depicts St Francis of Assisi in the state of extasy. Not a single detail disturbs the psychological concentration. This presentation of St Francis devoid of time and space was popular not only in Italy but all over Europe during the Counter-Reformation. The naturalism, psychological conciseness and typological-morphological analogies of the picture lead to Lombardy. Both the pose of the head and the deep shadows on the temple, nose ridge and brows are similar to representations in the almost brutal Lombard paintings.
