Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 54 x 66 cm Description: Ignoring historical authenticity, the Dutch painter placed the Biblical figures clad in oriental costumes in a fancy theatrical setting. An episode of Joseph’s life is shown: the Hebrew young man brought forth from prison interprets the pharaoh’s enigmatic dream about the seven good years and the seven years of famine. The imaginary antique architecture and the figures resemble those in Rembrandt’s and Lastman’s scenes taken from the Old Testament. Willem de Poorter was probably Rembrandt’s pupil for a short time around 1630. |
