Madonna and Child with St Francis of Assisi and St Clare

Created: first quarter of the 16th century

Material, technology: oil, poplar

Size: 47 x 66 cm

Description: The composition of lying format showing the Madonna and Child half length with a saint on either side was introduced by Giovanni Bellini around 1490. However, the modelling of the heads of Mary and the Child, the subtly rounded faces with thin brows and silky hair suggest the stronger influence of Antonello da Messina. The unknown painter who did not necessarily work in Venice combined the influences of Bellini and Antonello da Messina.
