Created: 3rd century AD Material, technology: limestone Size: h: 70,7 cm, l: 44,5 cm, w: 17,6-25,5 cm Description: The adjoining fragments once formed the front of a votive altar. The altar was dedicated to Jupiter by Iulius Crescens for the salvation of himself and of his family. Originally the area below and above the inscribed field was decorated by mouldings. There is a double fillet moulding below the inscribed field. On the left side of the altar an engraved ornament can be found in the shape of an L ending in an arrow (part of a series of thunderbolts, the attribute of Jupiter). Later, probably during the Middle Ages, the altar was used as building material, and was cut across lengthways. These slabs were further divided. | |
