Created: latter half of 18th century Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 62 x 74 cm Description: The tomb of the son of prince Tassilo, the founder of the Benedictine abbey of Kremsmünster has been in the church since 1304. The story of the prince killed in a hunt was depicted on the tomb after the account of Bernardus Noricus. The father, Bavarian prince Tassilo is led to the deadly wounded Günther by his hound. The grieving father is consoled by an apparition: a deer appears at the nearby spring marking the place for the burial, above which the prince had a monastery erected in 777. Bartolomeo Altomonte was contracted by Kremsmünster to paint two pictures after the legend in 1764, a variant of one of which is this painting. | |
