Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 110 x 63 cm Description: Dorfmeister, regularly identifying himself as imperial academic painter of Vienna, worked in Sopron from the 1760s and executed his clerical and secular commissions from there. In 1786 he worked in Pannonhalma. This picture is closer to his works that display some classical poise and a more static rendering after his period of baroque restlessness and animation. It is not settled whether the female figure standing by the cross is Magdalene or the Virgin mourning her son, with the instruments of tortune at her feet. | |
