Apotheosis of St Adalbert

Created: 1770-80

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 325 x 185 cm

Description: The scion of a Czech princely family, Adalbert was the bishop of Prague from 983. Forced to leave his seat several times, he finally went to Prussia on an evangelizing mission where he was martyred by the Prussian lances in 997. Two years after his death he was canonized. The execution of faces, hands and angels in the altarpiece of his apotheosis composed in a regular triangular form is related to the paintings of István Schaller. The picture is from the church of Varsány dedicated to St Adalbert. The village was one of the oldest domains of the Pannonhalma abbacy.
