St John of Nepomuk

Description: The cult of St John of Nepmuk, a canon of Prague, spread in the Habsburg Empire after he was beatified in 1721 and canonized in 1729. The biography of the martyr of the seal of confession was published by the Jesuit Bohuslav Balbin in 1725. The edition with J.A. Pfeffel’s engravings was used by Berghart as the model for his painting. Records mention a painter named Bernhard or Berghart involved in the decoration of the Tata mansion in 1764.
