Főapátsági Gyűjtemények

St Benedict

Created: end of 17th century - second half of 18th century

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 84 x 57.5 cm

Description: The composition tallies almost in every detail with the embroidered chasuble of St Benedict (C.19) in the treasury. Either the painting is the weak enlarged variant of the embroidery or vice versa, but a common model is also possible. The execution of the painting is mediocre, the style almost undatable. After the restoration of the order, in 1805 the following note was written about the picture of St Benedict’s altar: "...it is unsightly indeed, but the truth is that there isn’t a better one in St Martin’s." The description is so appropriate that it must be about this picture.
