Created: end of 17th century Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 258.5 x 171.5 cm Description: The inscription says that the portrayed man is Asztrik, the first abbot of Pannonhalma whom St Stephen sent to Pope Sylvester II to bring him a crown and apostolic cross from Rome. The Hartvik legend stresses the success of the mission: as a clever diplomat, Asztrik gave a suggestive account of Stephen’s merits to the pope. Later Asztrik became archbishop of Kalocsa disseminating the christian faith. The quality and type of the portrait subsume it in the group of 17th century Hungarian portraits of aristocrats and leaders composed in a landscape. |
