Holy Family with angels

Created: 18th century

Material, technology: oil, canvas

Size: 114 x 85 cm, oval

Description: It got into the collection as a work by Michelangelo Unterbergen, and later it was attributed to Paul Troger (1698-1762) for a long time. The reading Virgin holding the sleeping Infant, with St Joseph and angel(s) echoes a style and picture type that was popular in Rome in the early 18th century. The style reminds one of Sebastiano Conca’s (1679-1764) most strongly; it was presumably painted by an Austrian master after a picture of his. The size and oval form suggest it was an altarpiece of a chapel.
