Created: 1720-30 Material, technology: oil, canvas Size: 178 x 131 cm Description: Most recently the picture showing the meeting of the Queen of Sheba and Solomon is attributed to Bolognese Giuseppe Marchesi. In this youthful work Marchesi adopted a painting of identical theme by his older contemporary, Donato Creti. The Biblical theme was well suited to the ideals of the baroque, the representation of theatrical spaces of a great depth, the sumptuous materials, sharp contrasts of colour and light and shade, histrionic gestures and contrastive characters. |
